Space Solar Cells, Battery Automation Equipment, ESS Bidding — Three Signals of the First-Week-of-September Power-Source Race

① What Is the Story: A Power-Source Race Unfolding Outside the Cell

Three strands of news around the first week of September 2026 — space-grade tandem solar cells, an order for secondary-battery-manufacturing robotics automation equipment, and the Round 3 ESS central-contract-market bid — look like different industries, but they ask the same question: “Where is power generated, how is it stored, and who can build that equipment fastest and most precisely?” For planning and IP staff, this signal reads as a sign that the center of gravity of patent competition is widening from in-cell chemistry to adjacent areas.

Looking at the industry context, chemical differentiation within the battery cell itself is already the subject of a dense patent race in areas such as all-solid-state and sodium-ion. By contrast, the adjacent areas of “how to make the cell faster and more precisely” (automation equipment) and “where to store and supply the power once it is made” (ESS, space power sources) have received relatively less attention.

The tension lies in the fact that major news in these adjacent areas overlapped within a short period. On August 26, 2026, it was reported that the Round 3 ESS central-contract market was likely to be announced at a scale of 1 GW or more; on September 1, a Korean research team’s perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cell efficiency record was announced; and on September 2, JS Robotics disclosed an automation-equipment supply contract worth KRW 33.26 billion. This piece answers the question: “Why did these three strands of news come out together, and how should secondary-battery planning and IP staff read them?”

② Basic Principle: Two Layers of Net, Robot Hands, and a Fixed Pie

A space-grade tandem solar cell can be compared to casting two overlapping nets. A coarse net (CIGS, a thin-film solar cell made of copper, indium, gallium, and selenium) catches the longer-wavelength red and infrared light, and a finer net (perovskite, a light-absorbing material with a specific crystal structure) layered on top catches shorter-wavelength light as well. A single net misses much of the light energy, but using two layers lets you recover more power from the same area.

FlexCellSpace, which started as an in-house venture of Hanwha Systems and was established in September 2024, is developing space-grade cells of this type. The company has stated that it can cut costs by more than 60% and make panels 90% lighter compared with conventional gallium-arsenide-based cells, and it was reported to have completed initial space validation on the fourth Nuri rocket launch in November 2025. Being lighter and cheaper than conventional III-V compound-semiconductor solar cells is why it is especially attractive for satellites and spacecraft.

Secondary-battery robotics automation equipment replaces assembly and transport processes that used to rely on human hands and jigs (auxiliary tools that hold parts in place) with robotic arms and vision sensors. The KRW 33.26 billion contract JS Robotics disclosed on September 2, 2026 is a contract to supply robotics automation equipment for overseas secondary-battery manufacturing processes, equal to 108.48% of its 2025 revenue. That is an extremely large order relative to the company’s size.

The ESS central-contract market is a bidding system in which the government orders a set capacity of energy-storage equipment under long-term contracts. Rather than private generators building through free competition, it is best understood as a “pie of fixed size”: the state sets the storage capacity it needs, and the entire supply chain, including Korea’s three major battery makers, competes for a share.

③ Comparison: Space Solar Cell Technologies and the Three Signals

First, the characteristics of space solar cell technologies are compared. The original table is kept, but the efficiency of perovskite/CIGS tandem cells has been corrected to the certified records confirmed in public reports.

Category Conversion efficiency (%) Specific power (W/kg) Note
Single-crystal silicon (Si) About 20-22 Low Terrestrial standard; vulnerable to radiation degradation in space
III-V multi-junction 30 or higher Medium Current satellite standard; high cost, high weight
Perovskite/CIGS tandem Certified research-cell record 26.3% (2025) → 26.7% (announced September 2026) Superior to III-V Lightweight and flexible; long-term space reliability still under verification

What this table says: The certified record efficiency of perovskite/CIGS tandem cells (26.7%) still falls short of III-V multi-junction cells (30% or higher), but it rose by 0.4 percentage points in a little over a year. In the satellite market, where power per weight (W/kg) drives launch cost, lightness may matter more than the efficiency gap in deciding total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) competitiveness.

Next, the scale and nature of the three signals are placed side by side.

Signal Key figures Timing Nature
Space tandem solar cells FlexCellSpace Series A of about KRW 25 billion; lead of a KRW 10.7 billion, three-year government project 2026.07 Demonstration and investment stage
Cell manufacturing automation equipment JS Robotics KRW 33.26 billion supply contract (108.48% of 2025 revenue), contract period 2026.09.01-2027.08.31 Disclosed 2026.09.02 Overseas order, customer undisclosed
ESS central-contract market Round 3 bid likely 1 GW or more (Rounds 1 and 2 about 560 MW each) Reported 2026.08.26 Government-led long-term contracts

What this table says: All three signals sit at the threshold of moving “from demonstration to volume.” For ESS, the bid size is being discussed at about twice the previous round, and for automation equipment a single contract exceeded annual revenue. The point at which volumes grow is also the point at which the economic stakes of patent disputes grow.

④ Patent Perspective: Mapping the Scope of Rights in Adjacent Areas First

No specific patent (publication number, applicant) directly tied to these three strands of news is confirmed in public patent information. This section therefore sets out, instead of patent numbers, the points where scope-of-rights disputes may arise and what to track.

First, in secondary-battery automation equipment, Korean equipment makers are known to have accumulated patents in their own ways around notching (the process of cutting electrode tabs), winding, and transport. Equipment patents often claim “which members move in what order,” so a design that switches a process to robotic arms and vision sensors tends to take the form of replacing some elements of existing claims. In that case, even if literal infringement is avoided, infringement under the doctrine of equivalents (the legal principle that a substituted element infringes if it has substantially the same function and effect) may become the issue.

Second, for perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cells, research institutions in Korea and abroad may already hold many prior patents and papers on similar structures, making an FTO (freedom-to-operate) review essential when Korean companies move toward commercialization. What the Korean researchers emphasized when setting the efficiency record was likewise the materials and processes for stable stacking on a rough CIGS surface and the optimization of the connecting layer between the two cells. In other words, stabilizing additives in the perovskite composition and the interfacial buffer and connecting-layer structures with CIGS are cited as the elements most likely to overlap with prior rights.

Design-around scenario (counter-argument): If a specific interfacial buffer-layer structure falls within the scope of a prior patent, design-around options could include changing the buffer layer’s deposition method (for example, a solution process instead of vacuum deposition) or designing the layer thickness or composition ratio outside the numerical range the claim specifies. However, a design outside the numerical range may require accepting an efficiency loss, and if only the manufacturing method differs while the structure is the same, infringement exposure under a product claim remains. No definitive judgment is possible until the claim text of the actual registered patent is checked.

Because the ESS central-contract market is a bidding system, the business risk lies less in patents themselves than in whether the cells, packs, and power-conversion equipment supplied have passed FTO in the target country. Under a long-term contract structure, a patent dispute during the contract term could prolong supply-interruption risk, which makes this a high review priority.

⑤ Limits and Outlook: What Is Needed at the Threshold of Volume

Viewed optimistically, all three trends sit at an inflection point moving from demonstration to commercialization sometime between 2026 and 2028. ESS government bids are growing, automation equipment is winning continued overseas orders, and space solar cells have secured demonstration funding through a government project and investment.

Counter-scenario: For space solar cells, there is not yet enough data on whether early performance in low-Earth-orbit (LEO) demonstrations will hold up under the long-term radiation exposure of a geostationary-orbit (GEO)-class environment. If the results of the International Space Station external exposure test FlexCellSpace planned for August 2026 (several months of exposure to vacuum, temperature swings, ultraviolet light, atomic oxygen, and radiation, followed by retrieval and analysis) fall short of expectations, the commercialization schedule could slip. It is also not yet confirmed whether the 28-30% efficiency the company has cited is on a certified module basis.

Strategic alternative: It is effective for Korean equipment and materials companies to document individual demonstration results early as patent claims to secure priority. If they file only after demonstration data accumulates, the chance rises that an overseas competitor will have staked out a similar configuration first. Space demonstrations in particular can make the date results are published the reference point for judging novelty (not having been disclosed before filing), so presentation schedules and filing schedules need to be managed together.

Practical action: List the core components (for example, the connecting layer of a tandem cell, or the transport and alignment mechanisms of equipment) of any automation-equipment, space-power, or ESS project your company is participating in or considering, and cross-check each in priority order for prior patents in KIPRIS and Google Patents.
